I have read the man page on ntpd
I need to read something else.
I do not understand
(a) authentication
(b) keys in a key file
(c) what is their definition of "offset"
Can someone point me to better reading material?
Tnx,
Charles

The man page I read did not mention (a),(b), or (c) at all, so it's not
clear what you have read. Link?

Anyway, looking for something like this?
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/index.html

(a) an (b) are not specific to ntpd. Since I don't know where you read
"offset" -- and it can have serveral meanings related to ntp -- I won't
even attempt to decipher its context. Give us the source, Luke
dth (doubt this helps

There are IIRC two kinds of offset, time and frequency.

Ntp isn't really easy, even if setting up is not difficult, but
the underlying system is math beyond most peoples capabilities.

However, it comes on my box and with a little luck on yours too,
with quite good html docs(/usr/share/doc/ntp-<version>/index.htm)
should give you a start and ask your package manager what-else
comes with the ntp package.

Good luck

Sorry, I cannot really answer your questions, because I did not dive
this deep into ntpd. But I changed to chronyd some time ago. It's is
much simpler and does not have the problems with loosing
synchronisation, when your internet connection is temporarly down.
