It doesn't have to be Eastern Time. The time servers are all GMT.
It doesn't have to be a "public" server. In fact, less usage of the
publicly listed servers is probably a good thing.
Your ISP probably provides a time service.
Sometimes it isn't announced, but your smtp server will respond to ntp
commands.
The other thing is that it doesn't make a lot of difference what your
router is set to, except for logs.
It might be useful if you set your computer to ntp time.
Windows XP has an "internet time" tab if you double-click the clock in the
sytem tray. Other Windows can be set to the timeserver of your choice
using a few commands. These don't sync very often, but they are reasonable
for home PC usage.
