At present we are hiring a cable modem off the cable company. Are
there such things as routers that have a built in cable modem? (Is
this what a router is anyway??). Does anyone think we could therefore
save money on our cable bill by not hiring the modem off ntlworld, but
just paying line rental? I have emailed ntlworld about this but they
have not yet replied.
thanks in advance
Jenny

ntl will charge you exactly the same if you hand the modem back, the
only exception is existing customers who bought their own while that was
a supported option (and they regularly have to shout at ntl if they
change package). So even if a combined router+CM exists it won't help
you.

ntl do supply a wireless router package, check their website. Finally:
you'll get a better response using ntl.support.broadband.cm or the other
ntl newsgroups!

My cable model was available at the local warehouse club for $70 or so (I
think that the rental is $15 per month). It's up to you to decide if the
thing goes south do you just buy a new one or get the cable co to replace it
(if it lasts a year then you've saved enough to purchase a second).

I have not seen a DOCSIS capable wireless router but that doesn't mean that
there is not one out there. It's a pretty widely used standard so I would
expect that some company has created such a beast. I would probably just
get seperate boxes as then if one dies you can replace that piece and the
wireless router would be usable with any other ethernet interface rather
than specifically cable...

Thanks for the replies, I have been on holiday but am now
concentrating on sorting out the networking. What you said about not
being able to get discounts from the cable company if you have your
own cable modem is true, the ntl people emailed me to tell me. I'm a
couple of years too late for that deal!
Have a fun summer
Jenny
