I have a desktop that is connected to the Internet via a standard NTL
broadband modem through the USB. This modem also has a Ethernet
connection on the back. I have tried to connect my wireless router via
a cat 5 cable to the modem (not sure if i'm in the right port though as
I have the option of WAN or LAN?) and my laptop receives the wireless
signal and connects but it won't connect to the internet? Any idea's???
Beginning to loose hair over this now!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Glynn

I have the NTL BB modem connected to my router through the WAN port and
the PC's hard wired through the LAN ports but also 2 pc's through
wireless, you just have to set up the access for the wireless access
correctly ( security ), normally the routers have a wizard that takes
you through the settings, but depends which router you have. If you
can supply the make and model I'll beable to help further )

Ah, now there lies a problem. I'm not sure of the make and model of the
router and as far as i can remember it didn't have any software when
bought new!?! I wondered if it was something to do with my laptop
settings for this internet connection (do i need to create a new
connection for her internet?). To complicate things a little further
this computer is at my girlfriends but I also have wireless set up at
my own home and use the same laptop on that without any problems but
that is on Tiscali so ADSL???

Power down Modem & Router & PC

Cable Modem Ethernet Port ===> Router WAN Port

Router LAN Port ===> PC Network Interface Card

Power up Modem, wait, Router, wait, PC.

Start, RUN, type CMD, Return

Type IPCONFIG /ALL press return.

Look for IP address of Gateway (Your router)

Type Gateway's IP address into Internet Explorer address bar.

Log in to router. If you've not changed any passwords, search Google
for default login for your model.

Set up wireless.

If ya on MSN or XFire I can help you further lol.

I'm taking it that you have Windows XP on the PC's, if thats the case
XP you can choose which wireless connection you want to choose.

Routers normally come with a manual in that you will find the details
of the router make and model (normally) if not it'll have it printed on
the bottom or back of the router. Some people go for the best routers
Linksys routers (blue and black router with 2 or 1 antenna/s)

When I bought my router I had to login to the router and go through its
wizard (software built into the router), this will then access and
share the NTL modems internet with all PC's that gain access to the
router. I found it best to set up the PC's with the cable and then
later set the wireless.

If the Laptop is running XP the control panels network icon gives you
the options of which internet access you want to have just choose one
of the items on the left side (menu - cant remember what its called lol)

You can't use both USB and ethernet on the cable modem at the same time.
There are two ways around this:

1. Reboot the modem with just USB PC or ethernet router connected, each
time you want to switch from one to the other.
2. Get ethernet or wireless capability for your USB PC, and then connect
it via the router.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance. I have finally managed to get
both PC and laptop up and running and managed to secure it too.

Just for anyone who's interested I connected my cable modem via
ethernet to the router, bought a USB - Ethernet adaptor and then
connected the router to the pc via the LAN connection on the router to
my new USB - Etherned device. Then after much playing managed to secure
the wireless network too.

Once again, thanks for all your help.
