All internet access to ntl servers has gone t*ts up from about 1600 yesterday,
someone forgot to wind up the elastic band or something (DNS server crapped out
apparently).

That's a lot of p*ssed off customers. Thank (select deity) that I have access
at work.

It wasn't NTL's DNS servers that were at fault. A major problem in the
States caused all ISP's DNS servers to fail any domain name resolutions.

Yes apparently the northern TAT-14 which carries transatlantic links died:

http://www.kddiscs.co.jp/e/business/img/02_15.gif

From the Nildram ticket system yesterday:

_________

A major transatlantic cable system known as TAT-14 failed this afternoon,
and has badly affected one of our primary transit providers. Our traffic is
going via alternative routes, but some of these are running close to the
limits of their capabilities, so performance may be slightly degraded, and
it is possible that some internet sites will be unreachable during this
outage.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

What, DNS everywhere on the whole internet went down? Not likely - I was
quite happily working by VPN'ing to the office (VPN client has IP address
hardcoded) and surfing/emailing from there.

Also, lots of ntl: customers pointed their systems at other ISPs' DNS
which also worked (except for surfing via ntl:'s transparent proxies which
of course used ntl:'s broken DNS).

Zane.

sorry mate, I was connected also with no probs, but he is right, it was an
international problem, not just NTL
a few of the forums I go onto have it as a major topic of discussion at the
moment

Apparently the UK - US leg of TAT-14 has had a fault off the east
coast of America for a little while. The ship repairing that fault cut
into the cable and all would have been well except that a few hours
later the bit of TAT14 that runs from France to the Netherlands
failed. This fault meant that the ring was broken and the US-UK
traffic lost its alternate path - hence the problems.
