Hi,
I've got a laptop running as an internet gateway.Using USB to cable
modem. Ive a network card in there too that gives connectivity to 2 PC's on
the network.1 is running advanced server and offering DHCP service.
So my laptop is getting IP address from DHCP for the private network
(192.168.0.2 typically). However when I share the internet connection the
private connection changes from DHCP to static 192.168.0.1.
how can get the laptop card to stayas it is and the usb -modem connection
to take the 192.168.0.1 IP address

cheers

bazza

Does your laptop gateway run NATS?

Er, you can't! Your CM connection must be DHCP.

Also, when you enable ICS the internal side will 192.168.0.1. I'd
suggest you disable the DHCP service on your server and let the lappy
provide IP addresses to your LAN.

its running windows 2000 Pro which has Internet Connection sharing built
into Network connections. It is in effect a non configurable translation of
Network Addressing. It just gives the connection a dual IP address.
192.168.0.1 for the private network and theIp adress from provider.

My thinking was, that a router with NATS would provide FAR more security for
your network than just a laptop running W2K.

problem is nigel i've tried that too. Ntl CM connection set to DHCP on USB.
The network card for the internal network set static to 192.168.0.2. However
when ICS is enabled the netwrk card setting changes to 192.168.0.1.But its
not that connection I'm sharing.

All as expected. What's the problem?

No not all as expected. The Usb - CM connection should offer 192.168.0.1 as
well as the Ip address for the outside connection. However its the secondary
connection that changes to 192.168.0.1 Thus leaving me without a gateway to
offer other PC's on the network.
