Duh, of course it is. I must wake up today.

The same question about a firewall still applies.

Hi

Try setting the 'Internet Zone' or whatever Norton calls it to Medium (on
the ICS host), most firewalls won't allow any outgoing conections from the
client with it set at high. If that doesn't work try adding your LAN subnet
to the local zone and if that doesn't work then you *nust* disable, or
preferably uninstall, the firewall from bot PCs to ensure that you can set
the LAN up correctly.

Regards

Bill

Refering back to the physical diagram:

_PC1_ PC2
STB | | |
/CM--------NIC1 NIC2--------NIC3

NIC1 on PC1 looks to be configured OK. Your DNS server addresses
are the same as mine and the IP and gateway addresses look
plausible - assuming you're in the Nottingham area?

NIC2's settings are wrong for ICS. When you enable ICS for NIC1,
Windows should set NIC2 to IP address 192.168.0.1 and enable NIC2
as a DHCP server for the local LAN. The 169.254.x.x address means
NIC2 is timing out after not finding a DHCP server - i.e. its
behaving as if ICS is not switched on at all.

NIC3 (on PC2) has a 169.254.x.x address, confirming that there is
no DHCP server visible to it.

To eliminate it from suspicion, please would you disable (uninstall
if necessary) Norton Personal Firewall on both systems and try the
setup process again?

Tried controlled restart with Firewall on both PC's disabled and again with
firewalls uninstalled - with no success! I have also spoken to the techies
at my work & they don't seem to be able to shed any light on the problem
other than to suggest I upgrade to XP Pro or buy something like Sygate Home
Network software.

ICS on Windows 2K works fine, if only we can persuade it to do so!
Before you give it up, let's try a few other things:

Services
========
1) Right-click on the My Computer icon (or menu entry) and select
Manage.
2) In the LH pane, select Services and Applications, then Services
3) In the RH pane, scroll down to Internet Connection Sharing entry
in the list - it *should* show Status=Started and Startup
Type=Automatic
4) Double-click the Internet Connection Sharing entry and select the
Dependencies tab.
5) Note which other services are listed as dependencies.
6) Click cancel
7) Check each dependent service is running OK.

System Event Log
================
1) In the LH pane of Computer Management, click Event Viewer, then
double-click System in the RH pane
2) Scan the event log from the top down, going back to the nost
recent reboot. Look for errors and warnings that might give us a hint
as to what is going awry. Double-click any suspect entry to expand
its details.

Repair Reinstall
================
Assuming neither of the above reveals any clues, time for some brute
force. Run setup from your Windows 2K installation CD and do an
upgrade installation. This will do a 'repair reinstallation' i.e.
reinstall the system files, drivers and registry settings without
disturbing your applications and user data. Will take an hour-ish to
run.

Check problem isn't on host computer (one with internet connection). This
happened to me! I still can't figure out how to fix it though. I unshared
the connection, tried to re-share and it wouldn't, stating an error message.
Guess I'm gonna have to re-install.

Marcus
