A friend is on NTL's ADSL service (NOT their cable service).

He's trying to escape. Do they issue MACs ? I note that Virgin (whose
service they also run) do them, but I can find no mention on NTL's web site etc.

He's phoned NTL customer support, who of course had no idea what he was even
talking about.

If NTL do issue MACs, how do you obtain one ?

They do Tesco ADSL aswell. Best thing to do is stop interfering and tell
your friend to contact NTL. They will only speak to the account holder.
They will help him, but they will not help someone else interfering and
trying to speak on his behalf.

Which bit of "he's phoned NTL customer support" didn't you understand?

Do I understand that I can upgrade my NTLfreedom account (BT Line, no cable
around here) to broadband with NTL?
I have been with NTL dialup for a good few years and broadband will be
available here within the next few weeks

That's how my friend ended up with NTL ADSL broadband, he was originally on
the same dial up package as you, and he upgraded to ADSL.

He's trying to escape, because he's a 'low user', has a very long line that
only supports 500k, and his POP3 mail access comes and goes intermittently.
He'd be far better off on a cheaper package with another ISP, and a mail
server/service that's detached from his ISP. AIUI NTL are charging him 18
quid a month.
