I wonder how the OP measured this.

Try:

http://www.giganews.com/test_connect.html

My 3mb NTL recorded 2825 kbps just now. To be far it's normally around
this level so I'm not complaining.

That shows 262kbits/s for my 300kb connection, which is fair.

I wondered if the OP's figure had been determined with a browser
download, the problem being that browsers can start to download while
the save dialogue box is still up, but only start timing when the box is
closed; this can give interestingly high apparent download speeds.

Tried that - gives 265 kbits/s, so not significantly different.....

Except I scrolled down the results page and found a second set of
results showing 1.5Mb or thereabouts. Tried again, and got an impossibly
fast 314kbit/s for my line - and a second results page showing about
30Mb. I should be so lucky :-)

I'm not sure I trust that site!

I'm not convinced. My router says my 10Mbps Bulldog connection is connected
to the exchange dslam at 6304kbps, the giganews test, to the european site
reports the connect at 5238kbps, Zdnet says it's 8680kbps ;-)

something doesn't tally here ;-)

If you have norton firewall try the test on ntlhell.

Normal I get 2.8 Mb if off, if on then I can get readings of 132 Mb.
If only
