Hi,

Apologies for posting this here after posting it in the dns group, but i am
not sure if its a dns problem.

I have a W2003 server named "fax-server", on our NT4 domain. Its not got any
special roles. When I ping it from a W98 client, it returns the IP address
of www.fax-server.co.uk. This is an external IP address on the Internet,
looks nothing at all like what it should. Other servers are ok, they return
the local IP
address. The domain is connected to the Internet, so the ping program is
looking on the Internet first? Or couldn't resolve the name locally so it
looks outside?

I assume this means that the Wins system is not working properly, but not
being a wins expert, could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
S

will help.

Ok, I'm no network expert but isn't the domain search list going to look at "ourdomn1.co.uk" FIRST to resolve and then go up the network?

And isn't the IP addresses part of the public Internet range?

This looks strange.

Can you do an IPCONFIG /ALL on the W98 machine and post?

And if you go to another machine that resolves correct, what are the IPCONFIG values?

that yet.

First off, just a note here. It is not advisable to use special characters in computer names. The computer may handle it but some apps and other computers who connect to it may have problems. If you can change the name and remove the '-' (dash) it would be much better.

/rant

Ok, I think it's a name resolution problem for sure but with getting too techie, it might be best if you just do a manual fix to see if it works. And then worry about a permanent fix after you change IP subnets. These changes need to be made on each of the 'incorrect' machines. And the method of doing this may be different between W98 (how OLD is that?) and NT4, and W2K and W2K3. But try it on the W2K machine first since I have a version of that running.

First check if you're using LMHOSTS lookup; Settings, Network Settings, right-click local network, Properties, TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS, and see if the box is checked. Any changes that are made to either file and saved, are active immediately.

You'll have to make changes to two files, LMHOSTS and HOSTS. These files are for name resolution, and have been around since the dawn of Internet-Time. In fact before DNS, this was the only way to resolve names. They are stored in %sysroot%\system32\drivers\etc. They have NO extension, so don't add any. If you only have a LMHOSTS.SAM, it's the same thing, so copy / paste and rename the new one to "LMHOSTS." (with the dot at the end but no extension).

LMHOSTS stands for LAN Manager host file and is for NetBIOS name resolution; meaning short names with not DOTS (.) The cave men designed this file without fire-light.

HOSTS file is for TCP/IP name resolution and contains the FQDN (fully qualified domain name). It's only a generation or two old.

Use NOTEPAD.EXE to edit. Not any other editor since it must be in a DOS-Text format. WordPad doesn't do this and maybe your favorite doesn't either, so use NOTEPAD.EXE.

Question: are there any entries in either of these files now that you've checked them? This means, are there any lines without a hash (#). Post them for checking.

Anyway, add a line to each file; LMHOST with IP address and the name (no dots). Also, add #PRE to the end so it's pre-cached.

In HOSTS, you'll place the IP address, then the FQDN (with dots).

LMHOSTS example:

128.66.1.8 FAX-SERVER #PRE

HOSTS example:

128.66.1.8 fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk

Save both but don't close the NOTEPADs.

Go to a Command Prompt and type:

PING 128.66.1.8 - this should work since IP will route itself.

REMEMBER: computer names are case-INsensitive in Windows. So don't worry about upper or lower-case.

PING fax-server - this should work and show the name, it might even show the FQDN.

PING fax-server.
PING fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk

TRACERT (trace the route): this util should be in \System32 - it walks the route displaying the names and IP addresses. It will always use IP, so the HOSTS file is for this.

TRACERT 128.66.1.8 - what happens?

TRACERT fax-server

TRACERT fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk

Ok, so what happens? What names and IP addresses did you get?

Suggestions:

Get a good book on networking under Windows (2K, 2K3).
Get a few documents from the MS site about designing a domain for W2K3 with a mixture of clients.
Get a new NetBIOS domain name for your domain.
Get a new IP subnet for your internal network.

If you need more details, email me off-line. Hope this helps.

Ok, I'm no network expert but isn't the domain search list going to look at
"ourdomn1.co.uk" FIRST to resolve and then go up the network?

And isn't the IP addresses part of the public Internet range?

This looks strange.

Can you do an IPCONFIG /ALL on the W98 machine and post?

And if you go to another machine that resolves correct, what are the
IPCONFIG values?

I replied to mark-allen at mvps dot org as you suggested below, but no
reply.
Anyway, I've taken your advice and the hosts file entries cured the problem.
Tracert for 128.66.1.8 and fax-server does just what it should, it goes
straight there and resolves the name.
Tracert and ping for fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk returns a "host unknown"
message. I guess this is because I'm not using AD?

Thanks for your help and recommendations. Would you be able to recommend any
books in particular for networking help?
Why do you say rename the domain?

Regards

SW

First off, just a note here. It is not advisable to use special characters
in computer names. The computer may handle it but some apps and other
computers who connect to it may have problems. If you can change the name
and remove the '-' (dash) it would be much better.

/rant

Ok, I think it's a name resolution problem for sure but with getting too
techie, it might be best if you just do a manual fix to see if it works.
And then worry about a permanent fix after you change IP subnets. These
changes need to be made on each of the 'incorrect' machines. And the method
of doing this may be different between W98 (how OLD is that?) and NT4, and
W2K and W2K3. But try it on the W2K machine first since I have a version of
that running.

First check if you're using LMHOSTS lookup; Settings, Network Settings,
right-click local network, Properties, TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS,
and see if the box is checked. Any changes that are made to either file and
saved, are active immediately.

You'll have to make changes to two files, LMHOSTS and HOSTS. These files
are for name resolution, and have been around since the dawn of
Internet-Time. In fact before DNS, this was the only way to resolve names.
They are stored in %sysroot%\system32\drivers\etc. They have NO extension,
so don't add any. If you only have a LMHOSTS.SAM, it's the same thing, so
copy / paste and rename the new one to "LMHOSTS." (with the dot at the end
but no extension).

LMHOSTS stands for LAN Manager host file and is for NetBIOS name resolution;
meaning short names with not DOTS (.) The cave men designed this file
without fire-light.

HOSTS file is for TCP/IP name resolution and contains the FQDN (fully
qualified domain name). It's only a generation or two old.

Use NOTEPAD.EXE to edit. Not any other editor since it must be in a DOS-Text
format. WordPad doesn't do this and maybe your favorite doesn't either, so
use NOTEPAD.EXE.

Question: are there any entries in either of these files now that you've
checked them? This means, are there any lines without a hash (#). Post
them for checking.

Anyway, add a line to each file; LMHOST with IP address and the name (no
dots).

So don't worry
about upper or lower-case.

PING fax-server - this should work and show the name, it might
even show the FQDN.

PING fax-server.
PING fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk

TRACERT (trace the route): this util should be in \System32 - it walks the
route displaying the names and IP addresses. It will always use IP, so the
HOSTS file is for this.

TRACERT 128.66.1.8 - what happens?

TRACERT fax-server

TRACERT fax-server.ourdomn1.co.uk

Ok, so what happens? What names and IP addresses did you get?

Suggestions:

Get a good book on networking under Windows (2K, 2K3).
Get a few documents from the MS site about designing a domain for W2K3 with
a mixture of clients.
Get a new NetBIOS domain name for your domain.
Get a new IP subnet for your internal network.

If you need more details, email me off-line. Hope this helps.
