I have recently upgraded my network from NT4 to Win 2003. The original NT4
PDC was demoted to a BDC when the 2003 servers were introduced and everything
seemed fine.

However i am now at a stage where i wish to switch of the Old NT4 PDC but
when i do a number of client applications load very slowly and generally
network activity is slowed. As far as i can tell all references to the old
NT4 machine have been removed.

What am i missing? Should i be carrying out another stage on the now NT4 BDC
machine before shutting it down?

Thanks in anticipation

Can we assume you introduced one of the new machines as
an NT 4.0 BDC then promoted to primary and upgraded to
W2k3. If so then do you have all clients pointing towards
you new W2k3 DNS server?

W2k3 servers.

The client machines are all running W2k or higher?

Are your DNS/WINS settings all pointing to the new server(s)?

Open a dos prompt on the problem client machine
and run nslookup www.mydomain.com <mydomain
being the domain name>. What do you get? Next
do the same for the domain controller e.g., nslookup
mydomaincontroller.mydomain.com.

Ran nslookup on the clients and dc and they both pointed to the network dc
machine

Your next step is to power the BDC then use Network
Monitor or any other sniffer to capture the network traffic
and see what could be causing the slow down.
