Now I know I should know this one....................................

Just found out that my local exchange is going 21CN in the next couple of
months.

Does anybody know of a reliable way of stopping the migration from DSL Max
to 21CN as my speeds will not show any benefit and, from experience in the
field, I know that the connection can be more unstable?

I notice EMTRENT is now FTTC enabled, any idea which areas the street
cabs are getting DSLAMs installed?

You can't stop the migration but I think that using an ADSL 1 router
should limit the damage.

I guess it depends on who your ISP is.

I'm with Zen, and "Upgrading" is optional following the changeover of
the exchange to 21CN (or to be a bit pedantic, "WBC"). It's not
automatic. It looks as if the new MSAN has to be configured to allow
ADSL2+ on a per line basis, presumably by the ISP notifying BT
Wholesale. If this isn't done, you stay put on plain ADSL.

I elected not to go to ADSL2+ as I'm on quite a long line. Just to make
sure, my router is set manually to G.DMT.
Going by the grief that some other people have had by going to ADSL2+,
I'm glad I stayed put. As a bonus, my sync speed went up 20% and is much
more stable - perhaps by the new MSAN having rather more intelligent
firmware.

As far as I know, it's impossible to stop migration to 21CN. Once 21CN
is deployed, BT will no longer maintain the 20CN (ATM) backhaul from the
exchange; doing so would be nonsensical and extremely expensive.

However, any BT-based DSL provider has the ability to tell BT to only
offer ADSL1 service on the line, instead of ADSL2+. Some may even defer
the migration to ADSL2+ until the customer requests it. Your best
option would be to contact your ISP and find out how to make this
happen.

surely just tell your router to use adsl2 only?

the new DSLAM will be backwards compatible IIRC.

Give me an area and I may be able to help but the glaring omission, at this
moment in time is the Nottingham South and Wilford Industrial estate (around
50 units of medium to large industrial units) so possibly they are
concentrating on the home market place.

Thanks for all the answers, problem is (for me and my colleagues) is that
the free service is one of the only extras we get and using it we get stuck
with BT Internet (which I must say, for me anyway, hasn't been as bad as a
couple of others I have used) so it looks like I'll have to find a way of
fettling around with the HH firmware (if I want to continue using the BB
voice facility)...
