Not sure where to turn

Hello to all!
Here is my situation: I have a Windows 2003 File and Print Server, connected
to a Netgear 24 Port Switch, a 2Wire DSL Modem and then I have 11 XP PRO
w/SP2 W/S also connected to the Netgear Switch. It's a stright forward
Workgroup setup nothing fancy. I have installed VNC Server on the 11 W/S's
and the VNC Viewer on the server. I have assigned Static IP addresses to all
of the W/S, printer and server. When I try to access any of the W/S from the
server using VNC nothing happens. I get an error message stating: Unable to
resolve host by name: No such host is known. If I try to use Remote Desktop
Connection the only thing I see under the Workgroup is the server and nothing
else. Yet if I go to the W/S is can use RDC and access the server from the
W/S. I have tried different settings and have surfed the net for as much info
as I can find, but nothing seems to work.
Again, its a simple Workgroup nothing fancy, even when I try to see from a
Work Station the Computers near me nothing happens. Just says the netowk is
busy and that I should try again later.

Any and all help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in Advance!!

Hi,

Is NetBIOS enabled on your server and workstations. Check the WINS tab in
the TCP/IP settings of the LAN connection.

Joe thanks for the reply, Yes I have Netbios over TCP/IP set on Server and
W/S in Wins. I have Checkpoint VPN Client installed on the 11 W/S, so I can
not load Netbios as a Servcie because the VPN software uses TCP/IP. I also
have disabled the Firewall on the Server since I have the 2WIRE DSL Modem.

Try connecting using IP address instead of machine name. If that works, then
you have a WINS/DNS problem.

No can do. I have tried everything possible and I still cannot get to any of
the Work Statiosn from the Server either using Remote Desktop or VNC. I am
stumped. But I will tell you that the W/S were imaged using Ghost 7.0 from
the images used on our network W/S and these 11 W/S are being used at this
site with the Windows 2003 Server in a Workgroup. Could the Local Policies be
causing me this problem?

Sounds like a firewall issue. VNC uses port 5900 (if I remember right) and
Remote Desktop uses port 3389. So try "telnet <ip> 3389" and see if you get a
response. If not, then either the service isn't listening on that box/port or a
firewall is likely in the way.

I will give it a shot. I am also going to disconnect the 2Wire DSL Modem and
see how everything acts. Since the 2Wire is what controls the Web access it
may be the cause of my problems. Will update you as I move on. Thanks for the
info.
