Not Enough Memory Problems

I have two computers networked. One using Windows XP and the other using
Windows 98SE. The XP is using a network card hardwired to a Dell True
Mobile Wireless Router/4Port Switch. The router is connected to a dsl
modem. The 98 Machine is networked using a wireless PCI card. I have no
problems with my internet connection sharing and I can see both systems in
My Network Places.

Both computers use the MSHOME work group name and have individual computer
names. I've shared the "C" drive on both computers and can see both shared
drives on both computers. When I initially set up the networking, I used the
network setup wizard for the xp machine and made a floppy setup disk for the
98 machine. The 98 machine would not complete the wizard. The message read

"Cannot Complete the Network Setup Wizard......The wizard cannot find your
network Hardware" It then listed the possibilities,....."Network cards,
Modems, Cables, Device Drivers".

I manually set up the network on 98 machine which included: Client For MS
Networks, File & Printer Sharing and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Now I can
access files and folders on the 98 machine from the XP machine but I can't
access anything on XP machine from the 98. When I try, I receive this
message:

\\downstairs\c downstairs is not accessible. Not enough memory is
available. Quit Some Programs.

Thank You All
Carl

Steve Winograd has found the following possible explanation:

That error message is very misleading. The problem is probably that
an antivirus program has changed an obscure TCP/IP setting. Please
see this Microsoft Knowledge Base article for a likely solution,
specifying a value of 15 for IRPStackSize on the XP computer:

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011

I found that explanation in a message from Ron Lowe. I haven't asked
him where he found it. ;-)

This is a common problem, with several messages about it every week in
the Windows XP networking news group.

Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group
for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions
addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups.

Haven't seen him around in a bit, so I guess we'll just chalk it up to
public knowledge for now. :-)

Thanks for the responses. I deleted the network completely on the xp
machine, reinstalled it renaming the work group, computer name and shared
folders and for some unknown reason everything starting working fine.....All
the networking functions between the two computers are up and running...go
figure! WHEW!

I lurk occasionally, even if I don't post here much :-)

I don't dabble with 9x much anymore, and I prefer to
stick to what I can test from first-hand experience:-)

Thanks!!!

Why can't Microsoft post this?!?!?!

I have spent several days looking for a solution to
the "Not enough memory is available. Quit some programs."
when trying to browse shared folders on an XP machine from
a 98SE machine. I just edited the registery entry for
IRPStackSize from 11 to 15 and whaLa the folders open
now!!!

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by "Why can't Microsoft post this?" The
error is documented in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

But in any case I'm glad I was able to help.
