Norton Internet Security 2005 Bye Bye

Let me first state that I have been a long-term user of NIS..back to the
days when the firewall was another company completely (sorry..can't
remember the name) and have used NIS 2003, 2004 and 2005.

NIS 2005 was the first one to cause me real problems. It consistently
logged me out of MSN Messenger no matter what settings I tried, but one of
my biggest headaches was that ccapp.exe frequently grabbed 100% of the CPU
and then refused to let go i.e. none of the NIS processes could be stopped
(access denied error message).

I also noticed a serious system performance decline with 2005 and this is
on a high-end machine (64bit Athlon 3400+, 1.5Gb RAM)

In desperation, I attempted to seek support from Symantec! Well, here in
the UK, it is £18 ($34) per phone call..so needless to say, I didn't go
down that route!! I could find nothing in their knowledge base that helped
either.

Defeated, I reluctantly uninstalled NIS 2005 in favour of AVG Free Edition
(with free updates) and ZoneAlarm Pro.

Well, first virus scan found 6 viruses that NIS 2005 had failed to pick
up...and I perform a full system scan every day, with automatic Liveupdates
as well as manual ones!!!.....I was astounded....6 viruses!!

I then ran the Symantec security check from the web site and ZoneAlarm
passed with flying colours.

So for now, it looks like NIS is a thing of the past for me

Other Windows newsgroups report many problems with all Norton software.
Norton System Doctor is also known as Norton System Quack.

NIS 2005 and 2004 seem to cause more problems then it solved.

Take a look at NOD32 - www.nod32.com - with a combination of firewall,
anti-spyware etc it is a very good solution.

i've just ditched it also in favour of Bitdefender, only installed it
last night though so its still early days i guess.

Norton IS 2005 and previous products are all over warez groups with keygens
and cracks for auto update etc. I wouldn't rely on such a product for my PC
security if as it appears that Norton can't even keep its licensing secure.
I've been using Trend Micro products since 1999 and they've never let me
down. The current Trend Micro Internet Security has a firewall,email &
online email scan, anti-spam, wireless protection, real time scan and
scheduled scan.
I'd rather pay for something reliable than use a warez NIS for free.

I've been using Norton in one form or another for 10 years with few
problems. The 2002 edition of Ghost was a bit buggy but the virus scanning
and firewall applications work well, at least they do for me, I've not had
a single intrusion in almost 3 years of broadband with the system on 24/7
(apart from PC crashes..!)

Well apart from the time I plugged an old laptop in with no firewall,
which got zapped in 30 seconds flat, but that wasn't Norton's fault..!

And Trend Micro warez versions are all over the internet too! There
are less of them but that's only becasue it's less popular.
