Here's the setup I had at home when I first started networking; modify
it to your circumstances if you wish :-)
Similar machines to yours (one new one, one older), but both with
Win2K and ADSL.
- older machine with PCI modem _and_ network card, up in the attic.
Bear in mind that if you want the second machine to have an 'always
on' internet connection, the first machine (gateway) will also need to
be always on. Hence using the older machine as a gateway up in the
attic.
- set the older machine to your internet connection settings, and
there should be a tab there that sets it to ICS.
- to connect your two machines directly you'll need a crossover cable,
not a straight ethernet cable. You can buy a crossover connector, but
a new cable is just as cheap. Spending more money gets you a
hub/switch/router (delete as necessary), but I won't go into that
here.
- set the second machine's internet connection to use the Lan.
That's all there is to setting it up. Then there's the software side
of things:
- Firewall on the gateway machine, try zonealarm. Set it up and
configure it _before_ you connect to the net ;-)
www.zonelabs.com
- VNC server on the gateway, and client on the second pc. This enables
you to view and work on the desktop of the attic-based server
www.uk.research.att.com/vnc
- binaries newsreader, ftp server, other filesharing progs etc on the
server. Set them up in the evening via VNC to download overnight so
you can turn your main PC off and get some sleep at night....
For setting up filesharing between pcs, etc, refer to

Cheap as chips!
