Hi
Our area is getting adsl in 7 days (see here www.broadband4northiam.co.uk)
I have 2 PCs in my house, 1 upstairs and one downstairs.
I would like internet on both of them.
The distance between the phone line and the 2 pcs is about 20 meters.
What equipment do i need to put internet on both pcs??
One is running WinME and the other Win98SE.
Usually only one of the computers is on at at a time, so i couldn't use
internet connection sharing thingy in windows.

Thanks

Gareth

You want a adsl router with a built in ethernet hub. 2 cheap network
cards for each PC, and a couple of lengths of Cat5 cable.

I take it the two PCs are next to each other and are both 20m from the telephone
socket.

Then you need either:

1) ADSL router (integrated hub/switch) near phone socket
Long (20m) network cable x2
A network card in each machine

or

2) ADSL router near phone socket
Long (20m) network cable
Hub/switch in computer room
Short (1m) network cable x2
A network card in each machine

or

3) Telephone extension socket + 20m cable to near computer
ADSL router (with integrated hub/switch) near computer
A network card in each machine
Short (1m) network cable x2

or

4) ADSL router (with built in wireless) near phone socket
Wireless adapter for each machine

I think option 3 is your best, tidiest and cheapest, bet.

Go to this site & check out the section on setting up a home Network.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

You have several options, depending on how much cash you want to part with.
i.e. a wired or wireless home network. ADSLguide offers reviews on a
selection of hardware that you might require.

Sorry, reading with blinkers on! I just saw the distance to the two PCs is
about 20m!

OK, then you need either:

1) ADSL router (integrated hub/switch) near phone socket
Long (20m) network cable x2
A network card in each machine

or

2) ADSL router near phone socket

A network card in each machine

or

4) ADSL router (with built in wireless) near phone socket
Wireless adapter for each machine

or

5) Telephone extension socket + 20m cable to near computer
ADSL router (with built in wireless+hub/switch) near computer
Short (1m) network cable
A network card in one machine
Wireless adapter for other machine

I think option 3 or 5 are best. 3 if you can put up with the cabling.
