I have several Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 boxes in a active
directory domain. When I do Ipconfig /all, I see that the node type on some
of them show as "unknown" and there are some that show as "broadcast".
Shouldn't they all show as "hybrid"? How can this be changed and will this
cause any communication issues? I am noticing that my backups have been
failing due to "connection timeout issues" and wanted to see if there maybe a
problem.

Thank-you!!!

Are you using WINS? Are all machines configured to use WINS?

No, There are no WINS or DHCP servers in this domain. All windows 2000 &
2003 severs are configured for static IPs.

Thanks-you!

Then the easiest way to sort it out is to install a WINS server and set
all machines to use WINS. Setting a machine to be a WINS client should make
the node type hybrid. The client will then use WINS as default and only fall
back to broadcasting if that fails.

There is not much point in setting the type to hybrid if you do not have
a WINS server, as all machines will have to use broadcasting anyway.

Thank-you!
Do you know why some nodes would show "unknown" as the node type? Also, do
you think that the "broadcast" potentially cause communication issues with
netbackup clients?

Many backup systems use the computer browser service to locate machines
on the network. This in turn depends on LAN broadcasts and Netbios names. So
yes, a problem with name resolution on the LAN can cause backup problems.
