no Wifi after XP Pro installation

For some reason, after I upgraded to XP Pro from the built-in Home, the
laptop wouldn't let me use the setup window: for the Connect to Wireless
Network window is greyed out, and I can't use the Advanced or Connect
button. I can only cancel, and I get no wireless connection, even though
from the diagnostic software I see that it detects the wireless access
point nearby.

Any ideas?

Do notebook makers not want you to switch to an OS other than the one
they installed?

Well, installing the service pack seems to have done the trick...
