No TCP/IP for new wireless USB device

I have a desktop that I just bought a wireless usb device
for. The installation goes fine and the device
configuration shows it is receiving a signal from the
router in the building, however in my network neighborhood
properties there is no TCP/IP protocol associated with the
wireless device. (the device is there and has a netbui
protocol, but no tcp/ip - so no internet for me) When I
try to add a tcp/ip protocol for the usb device and click
ok, it closes the 'protocol-selecting' pop-up without
adding it. No error message. It just doesn't add the
protocol at all. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling a
couple of times.

I spent and hour on the phone with compaq and they told me
the problem was not with the wireless device but with
windows - something about maybe needing to reinstall
tcp/ip stuff???

Any ideas?

Are there TCP/IP protocol bindings for several other adapters? If so,
this Microsoft Knowledge Base article should help you solve the
problem:
