No pings, no port 25 traffic, no nothing.

I've set up an exchange server and a web server on my Windows 2003 server.
Right now, I have an SBC DSL connection that has a static IP. I've also
registered a domain with Net Solutions. All of my DNS is set up just right
(Reverse DNS lookup etc). As of this moment, I have my server going directly
in to my DSL modem (I know, very insecure but my firewall is still in
transit). I can browse out through the DSL connection, however it seems like
ALL traffic bound to this static IP gets dropped. I can't ping the domain or
the IP, I can't receive incoming mail on port 25 and I can't browse to the
website. However I can do all of these things going outbound. SBC insists
that they aren't blocking inbound traffic on 25 or any other port for that
matter. Can anyone think of any reason that this is happening? I also notice
that when I try to telnet into the server (from the internet) it looks like
it wants to telnet into the server but it just goes to a black screen with a
blinking cursor - it doesn't actually create a telnet session. Also, I did a
netstat on the server while I was attempting to do a telnet and I don't see
me making any connections to the server. Much thanks!

Hi Jeff,
Are you using a router between your LAN and the DSL network? If you are, any
chance the router is blocking inboud traffic?

Pablo

The DSL Modem is going directly in to the second ethernet card so there are
no routers or firewalls.

I might be wrong, but assuming there is only one link to the internet (the
one from the second NIC of your server to the DSL network) and given that you
can browse the internet from your LAN (which to me means that the 2nd NIC is
receiving traffic and passing it to the computers inside your LAN) I think
your server has a firewall that is blocking any attempt to connect directly
to it. Maybe the RRAS is blocking the traffic. Check:

Although it's not the same scenario, it might give you an idea.

Pablo

Then I think you should by all means wait for it, before you connect to the
Internet at all, even for testing. Do you at least have the Windows firewall
enabled on this box?

Post an unedited ipconfig /all from the server.

I would assume so because I can't ping it or anything else for that matter.
How can I tell for sure? Even if I wait to implement the hardware firewall,
that won't help me fix this problem.

Your inability to ping the server from the Internet may just mean your DSL
modem doesn't allow it. You should be able to tell if the firewall is
enabled in network connections.

You didn't post an unedited ipconfig /all as I'd asked....
