I have installed a new computer for an old user on our network. Our network
is Windows 2000, the new computer is Windows XP. The new computer can access
the Internet throught the ethernet connection to the router and modem but it
can not connect to the server (map network drive). I tried to ping the
server on the new computer and it could not find it. Help!@#$

Hi,

Did you try to ping known IP address on the network or did you ping just the
server name? If you can ping the IP and not the name, check DNS settings on
the client.

Also try connecting to the server share using server's IP address ... e.g.
\\10.10.10.10\share where 10.10.10.10 is IP address of the server...

I hope this helps,

Mike

Hello!

I did ping the server name first and got nothing, I went back after I got
your message and tried to ping the IP address that I have for the server
(router) and got a reply. I previously tried connecting to the server share
using the IP address and it did not allow that. I will check the DNS
settings on the client next.

I am confused as to why it is not recognizing the network drive since it is
connecting to the internet through it. Is it a compatability issue between
2000 and XP?

Thank you for your help!!

Hi,

If your clients use this server as gateway to access internet then this
server is probably listed as default gateway. Default gateway is defined as
IP not as name of the server so this does not cause any problems since there
are no name resolutions -- which I assume is the problem in your case.

When you try to map network drive you use e.g. \\server\share but the client
has problem resolving "server" to IP.

Check your DNS and/or WINS settings. If you use Active Directory, your
clients must use your active directory DNS and not e.g. your ISP DNS server.
