I have two family members who are thinking of getting broadband
one has a small white box about 40mm square where the line enters
this house is about 20yrs old
The other one is a very old property and has a large white box about
200mm x 100mm, do they need a nte5 master and who would have to pay
to fit if one was required

thanks

Walter

An nte5 master socket is not needed to recieve broadband, it just makes life
a lot easier for troubleshooting issues with internal wiring.

BT, like its former owner, the Post Office, now has a policy of charging for
everything and anything, sometimes as a matter of spite. While you and I
might think a modern master socket would be covered by £120 a year line
rental that you pay them, but no, not them....

An NTE5 is not required for broadband, you just plug an ADSL filter into
the BT phone jack. Phones plug into one socket, the ADSL RJ11
into the other.
An NTE5 can be useful if you have comlex extension wiring, since it
gives direct access to the incoming line, eliminating extension wiring,
letting you plug your ADSL modem directly into the phone line.
