Hi,

I have just installed Mandrake 10.0 on a DELL SC1600. The installation
process went as planned, however, I cannot connect to the network. If I
change the connection type from static to DHCP, there is a connection
immediately. I have tried changing the network card from the on-board Intel
to a second PCI card (Disabled the on-board card in the BIOS), but the
result is the same. I can ping the machines card but nothing else on the
network.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Well, when is in 'static', did you give him a _correct_ ip address,
netmask and so on?

Yes, the IP and subnet are correct and to be sure I checked what we have on
othe machines in the network. One interesting point though; our subnet mask
is 128, on all but the machince in question, the broadcast address ends with
255, whereas the problem machine ends as 215.

Use DHCP, then. If that for some reason is not an option, you need to
enter at least the following bits of valid information in order to make
the static IP address work -

* IP address
* Netmask
* Gateway's IP address
* Name server IP address (at least one)

Then again, if DHCP works, why bother - at least if we are talking about
the same network? If the network is set up to assign IP addresses via
DHCP and you just pick one statically, there might be trouble ahead if
you did not clear this with whoever manages the DCHP service.

Well, we need this machine to replace a web server, so DHCP is not an
option. The machine has the information you suggested and we have tried
flushing all ARP caches on the network.

Just to eliminate the obvious - it sounds like you may be re-using the
same IP address used by the previous machine - you did take the old one
offline before plugging in the new one?

If it works with dhcp, but not without, the problem is in your config.
Please post your config info.

Why not set up a reservation for your webserver in the DHCP configuration
file?
