No network signal detected

I've just returned from a friend's house who has a desktop & Laptop working
ok with a wireless ADSL Internet connection. (Belkin ADSL modem with
built-in 11g wireless router)

He has just been given an HP NX5000 laptop (Centrino) by his company. The
icon in the system tray reports that it cannot find any signal . Yet at the
same time his old laptop, which is right next to it, is receiving a strong
signal and connects to the Internet ok!

I have checked that the machine is set to automatically find the signal and
have clicked the refresh button but no networks are found.
Device manager reports that the device is working properly.

I am quite new to wifi and would welcome any suggestions as to why one
machine sees the signal and the other doesn't.

Noel

I had the same problem with my Acer.
Previously I locked the wireless access and forgot all about it :-)
Brought the laptop to Acer and they simply unlocked the wireless access
button found on the side of the laptop

Most probably this is because the Centrino machine has the 2100 adapter,
that is B only, but the ADSL router is configured to work only in G mode.

Thanks Danny,

You are quite right - there is a button just above the F6 key that turns it
on and off!
