Win98-network login dialog box appears, then windows
continues to load without accepting login info. Once
windows has loaded no applications will run. User is
required to Start, Log Off, network login dialog box is
displayed, and login info is accepted with successful
login. Have several pc's that have this occur
occasionally, and several that have this occur 100% of the
time. Windows update does not fix.

A common cause of this type of problem is that your PC is set to log on
automatically, so open up REGEDIT.EXE and look at the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
Network\Real Mode Net

If there is an "Autologon" setting there, delete it, then reboot the
computer and see if you can log on normally then.

I followed these instructions exactly, and there was
NO "Autologon" setting in this registry key. In fact,
the entries were identical to those of another machine
running '98 that does not have the same problem. Any
other suggestions?

I saved this message a while back which indicates symptoms similar to
yours. Just an outside chance.

Eureka!! I stumbled across the answer on the MS Knowledgebase. Its
260696
titled Desktop May Appear Before You Can Log On.

Cause: This issue can be caused by installing the CeQuadrat software
that is
included with the Phillips CD-Writer software.

To resolve this issue, delete the Show Splash value from the following
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CeQuadrat\C2UDFFS
Which I have done and problem is solved. Now boots straight through to
Network Logon. Hope this may be useful to any Philips CD owners.

Steve

If Autologon were enabled, you would't even see a logon box.
Has this machine had TweakUI installed with Logon Automatically At System
Startup ticked and the username and password left blank?
