No exchange capacite left

I have been trying to get a BB connection for some 7 weeks now and my
ISP has arranged three appointments for BT to do a managed connection
from ISDN to ADSL. Each time BT has failed to turn up giving the excuse
that they could not fit in their schedule in spite of my ISP checking
prior to the time.

The third time was to have been today, but when they checked with BT it
now appears that there is no ADSL capacity left on my exchange.

Having followed this group for a while this is the first time I have
come across this. Don't really know what this means in terms of time.
Maybe I have to wait for there to be sufficient demand locally to
justify putting in this extra capacity. I assume this would also mean
laying in extra cable or are they able to re-organize what they have.

Anyone know anything more about this?

"No exchange capacity" normally means that BT don't have any spare line
cards on the ADSL DSLAM's on the exchange.

It normally takes around 2/3 weeks for them to install new line cards...

Have a look at
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/capacity-summary.php

which gives an idea of the next DSLAM instal and a few other points
about your exchange.

Thanks Sunil

Yes that was the sort of thing that was explained to me but I assumed
from that it involved more work rather than just installing more
hardware at the exchange. Hopefully it will be as quick as you suggest.

There will always be some churn from users disconnecting their ADSL.
If your order happens to hit just then, then you might get lucky.

I agree that on the face of it there seems no ADSL provision problem.
The VP 'Green' means there is plenty of data capacity from the exchange
to the world, and they are not planning to put in a second DSLAM.

So I wonder what is missing for you, that can be fixed in 3 weeks ? Group ?

When Clara was ready to trial its 1000 kbps service for a limited number
of existing customers (I only saw the news posts, I have never had ADSL on
Claranet, personally), there was a hiatus when someone let down several of
the triallists, by ceasing their active 500 kbps service prior to anything
being available from Telefonica at their specific exchange.

Datastream is a different type of service, and each of the bigger network
suppliers must arrange capacity from your exchange (and increase capacity
when there are more users on a specific exchange, or all suffer contention
and get increasingly unhappy). Claranet has previously used telecom firms
which don't have nationwide coverage (with dial-up they had Freetime using
a couple of prefixes, 1664 and 1690 but initially not available at all the
exchanges). Telefonica seems the common denominator in this, perhaps they
are expanding their network to all exchanges more slowly: or "on demand" !

If BT are using the term "No exchange capacity" it will mean that there are
no spare line cards on the DSLAM in this case.

They are all either in use or have been "reserved" by ISP's and it will take
BT a few weeks to install additional cards.

Sunil
