I an trying to set up a wireless connection with just a
laptop with a pcmcia card and the base station on a
broadband connection. Problem is, the laptop has been
connected to the modem with a USB cable because the
internal ethernet card does not appear to be functioning
correctly. XP reports that the card is functioning
correctly, but messages say it's not plugged in, so I
suspect it's toast. Anyway, is there any way to configure
the base station without the ethernet connection. I was
wondering if I could just plug in the card and try to
contact it via http://192.168.2.1 even though nothing has
been setup yet? I'd try it, but the machine is at my
daughter's house where I'm trying to set her up. Help and
thanks.

Right. Use IE and go to 192.168.2.1 Change the WAN
settings first to get Internet access.

Once everything work, change the wireless settings SSID
and security (WEP, WPA) on the router first. You'll lose
connection at this point because the card settings do not
match the router. Change the settings for the card then
to match the router.

You can get rid of the msg "Unplugged card" by disabling
the wired connection on Network Connections.
