No DHCP @ 128bit WEP

Hi All,

I have an XP Pro Laptop running a Linksys "wireless G Notebook
adapter". I use it to connect to my SMC Barricade at home, and a
network at school (daily).

The problem is this...

If I let MS manage the connection I can get on at school without fail.
However at home, I get all kinds of interfenece from neighbors and I
can NEVER lock onto a connection with my router... I keep getting
"networks are available" messages.

If I disable net-zero in XP and use the Linksys software I can connect
at home only if I have a 64 bit WEP. With 128 bit, DHCP does not
work. It just doesn't find any IP. This is fine because I can use
64bit, but it does the same thing at school where I am unable to
change the WEP. I simply can't connect because it doesn't find the
DHCP address.

I can't keep switching between the two...

I would like to: Use the linksys manager to connect to both my home
and school network with a 128 bit WEP... Any ideas why this s
happening????

Jason

Don't know if it will help, but have you set your home AP and the
schools AP as preferred networks in the Wireless Networks tab of your
wireless adapter? That should prevent the wireless adapter from
attempting to connect to your neighbors networks (when yours is available).

Also, try setting your HOME wap to offer it's network on
a different channel. (The DEFAULT channel is typically channel 6,
but the whole REASON that there are 11 channels are to allow
neighbors who are interfering with each other to move their
respective networks onto different frequencies.)

(Your client PC software is typically plenty smart enough to find
your network without knowing apriori which channel to search for...it
should scan all the channels looking for the strongest signal, I think.)

As to which channel to move it to, if you want to take a more sophisticated
approach, grab a copy of the freeware program 'NetStumbler' (if your
wireless
card will work with that program...some don't). NetStumbler is capable of
listing out all the multiple networks in your vicinity (those who have not
disabled their 'beacon'), and you'll be able to see what channel each one
is on and its relative signal strength. Then, move your network to a
channel
that is at least 5 channels away from the competitor with the next-strongest
signal.

Hope this helps...

Dave
