Hi
I am becoming a bit of a regular here (I will have to stop helping mates)
Basically I have been struggling again with a wireless router, the
combination is a speedtouch 585 with a belkin adaptor, I have been having
alsorts of problems firstly connecting with encyrption, once i got that
working, the next problem was "limited or no connection" I then ran ipconfig
and this shows no default gateway, so I took my laptop round and connected
with no problem and copied the default gateway into the Alternate address on
the card settings, this worked for about half hour then once i restarted the
computer it lost the default gateway again, I then went into advanced
settings and added the gateway on the adaptor, this worked fine all day even
when i restarted the computer. I thought great thats cracked it until he just
phoned me again saying "page cannot be displayed", my laptop also struggled
until he rebooted the router then it worked again, the router has now been
restarted several times and although the connected appears there is still
soemthing wrong for us having to reboot router each time

Any suggestions, as you can see from above I have tried alsorts and now
tearing my hair out

Many Thanks

Rob,

As you've now learned, when you get "limited or no connection", you can't work
around that by manually assigning an address, you have to solve the problem.

First, is the router broadcasting the SSID?

If that's not the problem, have you done a site survey, using something like
NetStumbler?

And check the many other issues with WiFi. Try another channel for instance.

Some thoughts:

Are there competing wireless networks nearby that could be interfering with
his connection, or other intermittent sources of RF interference?
Has the router firmware been updated?
Is the router possibly subject to overheating?
Are there PADT disconnections showing up in his router logs (to ISP, not
wireless)?
Is he running P2P apps on any computers on his LAN? Too many files Dl'ing at
the same time can crash routers very quickly. If not outright crashed or
forced to reboot the routing data can be corrupted without the wireless
loosing its RF connection, giving the symptom you are seeing.

Routers are also more often subject to being attacked when using P2P, with
some networks being worse than others. Teardrop attack, Ping of Death and
SYN floods are favourites.
