No Computers in DOMAIN !!

Hello!

Thank you for reading this. I know your time is valuable and any tips are
appreciated.

We have a PDC and a BDC. Windows 2003, AD, DNS, etc, etc. It would be your
basic core network.

All of a sudden the PDC is not showing on the list of any computer when you
go to "My Network Places">>"my domain"

AND ... on the PDC NO COMPUTERS SHOW! If the domain is clicked, no computers
are displayed...

the cherry on top would be that, apparently, DNS is working fine. In fact if
from the server any computer name is typed, it can be reached. Same from any
computer, if the server's name is typed there is no problem.

Operations are as any other day and all users are working with no issues
whatsoever... But, all applications (like Veritas) can't see the network.
Veritas will still go to the remote machines and back up. But since it can't
see anything in the domain, no more selections can be made, nor modified.

I would master browser first. also make sure you have file and printer sharing enabled.

In AD Domains there are no PDCs and BDCs. There is a PDC Roles possesed by
one of the DCs, but it is not the same things as the old PDC/BDC situation.

Network Places does nothing more than display the contents of the Browse
List. It has nothing to do with wether the connectivity is functioning or
not. The Browse List is dependent upon having "Netbios Over TCP/IP"
enabled,...the Computer Browser Service running,...and,.I think,..the Server
Service running. If there is more than one subnet, then it also depends on
having a runing WINS Server functioning.

You could also add that it has nothing at all to do with DNS.

Does the DC with the PDC role have two NICs or is it configured for
remote access? Both of these can foul up browsing.

As weird as it may sound.

As soon as I added a "Reverse DNS Zone".... all came back to normal... .

It should work with no Reverse DNS Zone at all.
It should work without a DNS Server at all.
In a single subnet it will even work without a Domain at all.

So this just means that something is wrong somewhere and this just "covered
up" the problem and now it will be harder to find the problem.
