Hi

I am looking at the ways to avoid paying line rental to BT. Broadband
package could be a solution no? What are the solutions on the market
to benefit from broadband on the computer for surfing and make cheap
phone calls through the internet without having to switch on your
computer? I discovered a product by Orange with the livebox that is
doing exactly that. Are there others?

Thanks

lap

Cable TV or if you live somewhere with a LLU operator you have an option.
But you'll still be paying someone for the bits of wire to your house.

Or you could use a cellphone and pay them for the data. But its probably
cheaper to pay for a BT line.

Even if "naked DSL*" reaches market in the UK, you will still pay rental for
the bit of wire because someone has to maintain the bit of wire. Unless you
know a way to magically create wires from your house to an ISP.

Lots, including BT who you have decided to not use.

Numerous makers of boxes which will make VOIP calls without PC being
switched on. Unfortunately its an area lacking in firm standards, so boxes
which work with Skype won't necessarily work with another provider, etc..

(* industry term for DSL services without a PSTN line operating at the same
time)

SIP is a standard, you can change from one SIP provider to another.
IAX is another standard.

Most go for a SIP provider.

Skype is proprietary.

Yes for the wire, but does the BT line rental not also cover at least
part of the (PSTN) exchange equipment (line card and maybe more) to
which your line is connected? A naked DSL line would not have a
connection to the PSTN part of the exchange so could, in theory, have
cheaper line rental.
