No Access to Network

I am setting up a home network, and am running Windows
98SE on one of the computers. If I change the computer
name, workgroup name, or emable file sharing, my access
to the network is no longer there when I reboot the
computer. The network interface card is disabled. What
is going on? Do I have to log onto the network now? If
yes, how do you do that, or what else do I need to do?
Any help is appreciated.
