Hi all,

I am new to networking and want to set up a small home network
consisting of two machines.
From my research I know that I can do this using crossover cables.

My question is, one of these machines has a 10mb NIC and the other a
100mb NIC. Will there be a problem with this kind of setup?

Thanks in advance,
Ritchie

Almost certainly not. The 100baseT board will fall back to 10M
bps when the link is negotiated.

Unless it is a 10/100 dual speed NIC, the answer is "yes, there will be problems".

If the speeds don't match the cards will not communicate at all.

I would recommend buying a small switch with 10/100 ports. This will
let your 2 current machines connect, and allow expansion later. Otherwise
replace the 10mb NIC with a 100mb card.

Have you (or anybody else) seen a 100Mb/s single speed Ethernet NIC?

Probably not. The 100 Mb NIC will autonegotiate down to 10 Mb.

Not recently. I did a few years ago.

I've seen stuff that only mentions 100mb/s. It *might* have worked at
10mb/s as well, but I never tested it. It was what could be termed
"profesional grade" equipment, for SUN gear.

Hi again,

Just wanted to thank everyone who replied to my post.

I have decided to buy a switch as suggested.

Thanks again,
Ritchie
