I've been trying to setup NIS for the past 2 days and have had extreme
difficulty.

The server, and client I'm using to test with both run Debian. I've
followed the Debian NIS HowTo and the one on TLDP.

I'm at a bit of a loss because I cannot find _anyone_ that has had the
same problem as me. The client can ypcat any shared file, and 'ypmatch
bhearsum passwd' returns a result. But I still can't login as 'bhearsum'!

I've tried many many variations in /etc/nsswitch.conf

passwd: compat
passwd_compat: nis

OR

passwd: files nis

OR

passwd: nis

None of the above work. Am I missing something here? Does PAM have to be
NIS aware? Should I turn shadow passwords off?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

- Ben

What error are you become?
Have you put
+::::::
to the bottom of your /etc/passwd ?

Yes, I have that in the bottom of /etc/passwd.
I just get 'login incorrect'.

Does the username also exist as a lokal user?
In this case the "nis" keyword in nsswitch.conf should come as first.

No, they only exist on the NIS server.

Whats the length of the password? In the past with more than 8 characters
the last characters were just ignored, the nis version of current debian
causes 'login incorrect'. So far I have not figured out the reason for it.
It pretty annoying.

Bernd

Length of the password is 7 characters. It's the only one I've tried
though...maybe I'll try a different one when I get home tonight.
