Hi,

I have problem with my redhat 9 based NIS/NFS server or actually with
NIS/NFS client. I have succesfully set up NIS/NFS services, but when I
login to NIS/NFS client I get this "I have no name!" on prompt:

----clip----

Last login: Mon Jun 14 10:34:58 from server1
id: cannot find name for user ID 501
id: cannot find name for user ID 501
[I have no name!@cpu4 user_name]$

----clip----

Has anyone seen this error before, google.com didn't help me too much?
ypcat passwd work fine in NIS client and I see NFS mounted files from
server etc, but id cannot be found?

Thanks for help!

-Tero

There are two passwd maps: passwd.byname and passwd.byuid. Check on the
server that the .byuid map is present and correct.

I can do ypcat passwd.byname and passwd.byuid as a root on NIS client
and output from is same exept lines are in different order.

I wonder if `I have no name!' is output from `whoami'. Try it, what does
it output.

Yes. It happens when your users UID range is different on the server
than the server's Makefile, IIRC. You may want to check/change your
/var/yp/Makefile for the minuid and maxgid value to make sure it's
including all the UIDs from the correct minumum for your system.

Just as a check, if you `ypcat passwd.byname', do you see an entry for
your login name?

Comes from bash, IIRC... - I wonder whether bash will use whoami for
that, though.

Cheers, Jack.

My personal reading of the string "MicroSoft" expands to "NanoWeak"...
