Up until recently, i was able to max out my dsl connection with giganews
but recently i've only been able to get about 0.73mb/sec!

we use nilly at work too and i'm getting the same problem there also.

nothing has changed setup wise with the machines so surely this has got
to be nildram port throttling has it?

current connection speed is showing 5592kbps

i'm using the latest registered versions of forte agent 4.1 & newsrover
12 and both packages are only giving me transfer rates of 0.73 (even on
a large file).

i have all 10 connections opened up and tried the non standard nntp
ports that giganews offer. giganews tech support couldnt offer any
other advise saying that the pingbacks looks good so it must be the isp.

any other nildram customers experiencing similar problems?

just got off the phone from them and they have confirmed traffic shaping
is in effect capping nntp downloads to just less than 1mbit.

for anyone wanting their mac codes, email (E-Mail Removed)
with your name, phone number & reason for request.

hunting round now to find an a decent alternative, shame really because
i've been with nilly for the last 3 years and never had any problems.

Zen do not shape or throttle in any way, they do have caps though.

i rang Zen this afto actually as they were top of my list, it only works
out another fiver a month compared to what i'm paying now also as nilly
charge me for fixed ip.

zen did confirm they had no traffic shaping and said they did not plan
to either in the near future. next year may be different though but if
you're paying a premium for a service they've got to have some
allowances over the other isps.

not received my mac code yet either, i can only assume that is because
they have a big backlog to work though!

Hi Paul,

Me 2... Exact same Giga + nildram...

I did try this though and its working great

Change the port for "news-europe.giganews.com" to port 80,..

For the record Giganews will accept connections on ports, 119, 80 & 23

easynews does this too except you need to use "proxy.news.easynews.com" on
ports 22, 23, 53, 80, 110 and 443 to allow you to bypass firewalls or rate
limits on port 119

Hope that helps

PS - Still leaving Nilpex on principle - hate giving money to bunch of loosers.

i tried all of those ports and all of them were not giving me a transfer
rate more than 0.68mb/sec.

just collected headers on my works account and got the same thing. i
have however just changed the port to port 80 and that seems to have
speeded things up, just grabbed an article at just over 3mbit. whilst
it shows that even the fully managed business product is still capped,
they appear not to be doing that for port 80. my residential port 80 is
though so that could be quite selective.
