NICs won't keep static IP addresses, and other strangeness

I have a Dell Poweredge 1900 server, with two Broadcom NICs. W2K3 R2 SP2
Server.

If I give either of them a static IP address, and then go back to check it,
they're set back to obtain automatically.

ipconfig /all shows the NICs with the addresses I set, but one says DHCP is
enabled, the other does not. Yet neither show the IP addresses I set up in
the properties of the connection.

If I reboot the server, the one NIC (for the LAN) keeps it's IP address, but
the one for the WAN reverts back to trying to get an IP address.. and then I
can't log into the server remotely.

I've tried uninstalling the Dell/Broadcom drivers, I've tried using drivers
directly from Broadcom, removed them and installed drivers from Dell's
website.. everything installs fine and looks good, but the IP configs won't
stay static.

I'm not using WINS or RRAS.. I've tried disabling everything I could think
of to effect a change. I will note that when it just had 1 NIC, I believe
it worked correctly. But I'm not even sure of that at this point.

There is a DHCP server on the LAN, so DHCP is disabled on this server.

I can't run the 'connect to the internet' wizard either.. it does funky
things like only showing 1 adaptor as a choice, or reports that neither
adaptor has a static IP, which they do. I'm sure it'll work once I figure
out why the NICs won't keep the IP address.

Thanks,

Kiran

Hello,

that's a bug in the Dell Broadcom driver as mentionned by their technical
update notification.
New File Updates

================================================== ====================
Network: Broadcom NetXtreme Family of Adapters, NetXtreme II Family of
Adapters, Driver, Windows Server 2003, English, Multi System, v.10.19.01,
A05
Criticality: Optional
File Date: 8/29/2007 12:00:00 AM
Description: Fix to the installer (setup.exe) to fix an issue where updating
from the 2.6 and 8.3 family driver versions would cause a loss of static IP
addresses and other instance specific settings. This is only an update to
the installer of this release, the driver and application versions are
exactly the same. The DUP release is also changed to fix an issue where the
DUP would not update from a PnP or driver only install.

Thanks for the reply. I did download these, but perhaps I didn't follow the
directions correctly. I'll take a look at it again.

Well, I don't see (or understand) what you're supposed to do. I installed
the drivers, then installed the update. But the same issue still exists.

I did read this, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912222 and wondered if it's
the MS SNP causing the problem? I was going to try the Netsh command to
disable SNP.. but I'm really guessing at this.

If there's any other hints to this, please let me know.

Thanks,

Kiran

Hello,

we ran into this issue with one dell server.
As it was before they spoke about it, we replaced with official broadcom
driver, which are always far more recent than the dell one any way. Dell
driver can't even do teaming
