Hi

I have just reformatted my hard disk and reloaded Windows ME.
Everything seems to be working fine except for my internet connection.
I'm using broadband from Blueyonder with a Netgear FA311/312 nic and
Motorola Surfboard 4100 cable modem. I use an Ethernet connection. The
problem seems to be that TCP/IP has not been installed for the nic.
Should this have happened automatically during the reformat and
reinstall of windows or do I need to separately install a driver for
the nic and then configure TCP/IP? When I was reinstalling windows,
the cable modem was switched on throughout the process. Would this
make any difference?

Thanks very much.

Paul

Hi Paul,
Can I ask you for clarification?
I am not sure from reading your post if :
a: The NIC driver was not installed
b: The NIC driver was installed but TCP/IP protocol wasn't
c: The NIC driver and TCP/IP were installed but were not bound to each
other.

Look in SYSTEM - DEVICE MANAGER - Network Adapters.
Is your NIC there? is it reporting any resource conflicts?
Is Dial up networking in there?
if so has that got TCP/IP bound to it in "Network"

If the wrong NIC is listed delete it and reboot, plug & play should detect
it and when prompted feed it it's proper driver.

If its is JUST the TCP/IP protocol that is missing, just install it :
Network - Add - Protocol - Microsoft - TCP/IP

Just one other Q,
When you say you re-installed Millennium (I wouldn't have bothered but I
digress....)
Do you mean that, or did you use your PC manufacturers recovery disk?

Hi Graham

Thanks very much for replying.

> Can I ask you for clarification?

When I look in Control panel - Network, TCP/IP is there but there's
nothing attached to it

No, it's missing

> Is Dial up networking in there?

Yes, the dial-up adapter is there

> if so has that got TCP/IP bound to it in "Network"

No

> Do you mean that, or did you use your PC manufacturers recovery disk?

Yes, I used the Operating System disk that was supplied with the m/c
(a Dell)and simply ran the Setup.exe program

When I reloaded ME, I wasn't prompted at any time for the NIC driver.
I've now downloaded it from netgear's site. What I was thinking of
doing when I get home at the weekend is to run "Add new hardware" and
try and instal the NIC. Do you think that will sort it? Should I also
delete TCP/IP before I do this?

Thanks a lot.
Paul

Try the add new hardware option. If that doesn't work try the card in a
different slot, (that has worked for me on many occasions).
Keep in mind that its the NIC driver you are installing in the first
instance,
Don't concern yourself with TCP/IP you can see the NIC in Device Manager.
Make sure that P&P isn't disabled in the BIOS.

I am still not 100% convinced that the Dell OS Disk is not in fact a system
recovery 'image' disk, after all setup.exe is very common filename.
If it is, and the Netgear FA311/312 was not in the machine as supplied by
Dell, that would explain a lot.
Did your disk install all the non-Microsoft apps that came with your
machine?
Did it just display a simple progress bar and took just a few minutes to
run?

Keep us posted.
Graham

Went to Add Hardware and installed the PCI card using my new drivers
disk. All is now well Thanks again,

Cheers
