NIC problems in FC5 upgrade

Just upgraded a workstation from Fedora Core 4 to 5. Did the upgrade
option.
After doing so, the NIC eth0 wouldn't come up. It gives an error that
it may be unplugged.
(A RealTek on the mobo nic.)
I rebooted into WinXP and it still worked fine there.
So I rebooted back to FC5 and it still says it's unplugged.
I reran the network setup, and changed it from DHCP to manual
IP/subnet/gateway. And now it acts like it's online, I can restart
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network and it says "OK", but no actual connection.
(Reboot to Windows, still fine.)
Is this a known issue with FC5? Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Liam

Not that I'm aware of, but there seems nothing that doesn't give
you some problem.

As usual you don't give any information what you did or error
messages you got, logs or anything that could enable someone to
actually help you, without asking back.

Thought having kill filed you long ago for exactly this ever
repeated behavior? But you might just have changed your mail
address?

Good luck

Spescious hyperbole. Cute. =)
You were born with all the knowledge in the world, weren't you, and
never have had any problems with anything, have you?
Nice.

Yep, no information at all like where I said I checked to see if the
NIC had itself failed by booting up Windows and seeing that it worked
in there, or where I said that I switched from DHCP to static
information, or that I tried restarting the network service.
Yep, didn't mention that at all, did I.
Granted, I should have written down the exact error message, and copied
the messages log to a USB drive and copied them over here.
But then, I really didn't ask for anyone to figure the problem out for
me, did I/
To quote myself, I asked: "Is this a known issue with FC5?"
I would think that I gave enough info that if someone did know of some
issue with the FC5 that would cause symptoms like these, they would
recognize it.
And if not, they simply wouldn't reply and electrons get wasted.

Nope, same ole address. Hey, kill file me if you like. No tears shed
here. =)
Thanks for taking precious time out of your perfect day to bother
pointlessly replying to an obviously incompetant idiot like me who must
rank way below an iMac user on your scale of people you are superior
to. I live to force you to read my terrible posts and make you reply to
them, you know that don't you? My heart is a little warmer now. =)

Of course not, but I learned to phrase my problems properly and
got usually pretty good help, if I couldn't solve the problem on
my own.

You waste yours and just others time asking usually with missing
detailed information.

This information is completely useless, hence there's no
information. The output of 'mii-tool', 'netstat -rn', 'ifconfig'
and 'lsmod' would have been a start.

And I told you no, it works like a charm.

This is a technical newsgroup, people post here to solve some
problem, asking for help.

Fine, don't real care about it. You see, there's no problem with
you personally. Just that you could get better help if you take
some things into consideration:

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way?"

Good luck

Well now see, that's extremely useful stuff I could really use.
Granted I knew "ifconfig" and I should have copied that to a USB drive
or something and included it... but I really didn't intend to try to
get people to fix the problem for me... just let me know if there's a
known existing issue based on my general symptoms.
(Being that FC is basically a beta for RedHat enterprise software, I
wouldn't think it's impossible.)
I was still hoping to be able to fix it on my own.

Now recommending those tools, mii-tool, netstat -rn, lsmod, those are
helpful apps I wasn't aware of (or was at one time and have completely
forgotten them.)
Knowing ifconfig, if I man'ed it, I would have come upon a mention to
netstat, but other than that, it's very difficult to find what tools
exist for figuring things out on my own, or be able to provide enough
GOOD information to get pointed help.

Well I think all things considered, I haven't violated many of those
concepts. =P
With the exception of this post, I 99% of the time assume the problem
I'm having has something to do with what I'm doing or not doing, I
described my symptoms and what I did in chronological order... just not
ENOUGH and detailed info, partly because of my lack of including
information I had the knowledge to provide, but partly because I didn't
know what tools there may be to GET more and more detailed info I could
have provided.

But, OK, so I can do better.
Still don't think I screwed up enough to be flamed.=/ At least I
bottom/in-line post *g* Ever been to a Mac or Windows newsgroup lately?

Indeed, this is a pretty strong point these days. ;-)

Can't remember ever been in one of those ngs. You'll find me in
unix/linux related ngs usually. ;-)
