Try ebay.com or pricewatch.com if nothing but a 3Com or Intel NIC will
do. For a simple home network, you won't see much benefit from an
expensive NIC.

Impossible to answer this without more specific information. The main
difference between an RTL8139 (about $10) and a 3Com905-C (about $30) is
that the RTL8139 requires more attention from the CPU. In a situation
where the machine is maxing out the bandwidth constantly, the 3Com card
will provide better throughput.

3 of what? So this is a router, not a gateway. If you're not going to
be maxing out the bandwidth on all the NICs at once, you can use just
about any NICs you want. If I were you, I'd use a kernel more recent
than 2.4.18, too, since that kernel and all kernels before 2.4.26 had a
bug in them that allowed any logged-in user to cause a kernel panic.
