NFS subdirectory mounts

When I mount server://home at /mnt/NFS/server/home everything is hunky
dory, except I can't see any files in /mnt/NFS/server/home/user1, I can
see files in the home directories of other users and other directories
under server://home. I'm logged in on the client as user1 and the
directories on the server appear to have the appropriate permissions.

If I export server://home/user1 and mount it as /mnt/NFS/server/user1, I
can see the files OK.

Is this correct? Why can I see files in other users home directories, but
not user1?

Thanks in advance

can it be that /home/user1 is a mount point and some other device is
mounted under that dir? by default nfs exports are not recursive
regarding mount points.
