nfs permissions problems: are they fixable?

Hi, Hoss.

I have an nfs question for you:

I notice that, if I have a file system remotely mounted by nsf, and, say,
it's readable only by root, then, on the remote system -- even if I'm
logged in as root -- I can't read the file.

This seems to be the source of the odd permission problems that I have,
when backing up and restoring an nfs-mounted filesystem.

I have a wierd feeling that this is "fixable" somehow -- just as, the
problem that ssh had posed -- requiring passwords to log in on another
machine on the same network, even as the same user, even when the same YP
password database is being used -- is "fixable", using public key
encription.

Am I missing something elementary again? Or, is this a real, intrinsic,
problem/limitation of nfs?

Yours,

-- Saul

man exports
search for "root_squash"

root is usually mapped to another user on remote systems' nfs mounts.

See the no_root_squash option in the exportfs man page.
