NFS and symbolic links?

I've done nfs mounts for ages, on various solaris/linux/irix boxes. I just
now set up an nfs mount on my new debian box from my old redhat server and
while the mounting seemed fine, the dirs that are symbolic links on the server
aren't actually there -- I can see the link with a ls -al, but can't go into
that dir. The other dirs that aren't links work fine.
I can't recall ever seeing this before, and can't find anything about it
in the man pages or how-to.
