nfs and portmap service problems

Greetings,

I am trying to set up a RedHat 7.3 system to allow NFS connections to
itself, and I believe I have the /etc/exports file set up appropriately.
My problem is with the nfs and portmap services.

When I perform the command "/usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p", I get the following
output

================================================== ======================
rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection
refused
================================================== ======================

When I perform the command "/etc/init.d/./nfs status", the terminal simply
hangs with no output. The same happens with portmap. If I try
"/etc/init.d/./nfs stop", the terminal also hangs, and again it's the same
with portmap.

However, when I try "/etc/init.d/./nfs start", I get the following output

================================================== =====================
Starting NFS services: [ OK ]
Starting NFS quotas: Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive;
errno = Connection refused rpc.rquotad: unable to register (RQUOTAPROG,
RQUOTAVERS, udp).
[FAILED]
Starting NFS mountd: Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive;
errno = Connection refused
[FAILED]
Starting NFS daemon: [ OK ]
================================================== =====================

When I try "/etc/init.d/./portmap start", the terminal tells me the
portmap service started succesfully. Even after starting both of these
services this way, the status and stop commands simply hang.

I noticed there is no mountd service in /etc/init.d, and the only place I
can find mount.d is in /etc/log.d/scripts/services/.

Does anyone know what may be going wrong?

Thanks for the help,

Jeff

I solved the problem. A firewall was running on both the server and the
client. Shutting those both down solved this particular problem.
