Mike is my neighbor. We just bought a Netgear Router for HighSpped
access and a WG511 wireless card. We are tying to connect from house
to house and are able to do so ONLY using Ad- Hok. Neither one of us
has EVER used Wireless and we had to call Netgear support in order to
get the Ad Hok up and running, but when we asked about getting it from
his house to mine, it was out of their scope of technical support. He
has a built in wireless card and mine did not. I got the Netgear
WG511 and we split the cost of the Router. Anyway, I can SEE the
router with the wireless card, but when i click on the Internet
Explorer it does not come up. What do I need to to (or Mike) to get
connected. We BOTH have NO SECURITY on the wireless devices because
we do not know enough about it to turn it on and then off again. ANY
HELP will be appreciated, and we have been trying this for 3 nights
already with no luck.

Thank You ALL...

Dan

I'm no expert but I do have a Netgear Access Point. Is your computer
connected to the router with a cable? Did you set up the SSID's? You have
to go into the router configuration and pick a SSID. You could also leave
it at it's default. You then have to configure your wireless card to use
the same SSID. Make sure there both the same on your computer and your
friends. Make sure Open System is ticked on the Security tab. You can add
security later after you get it working. Another thing, maybe the wireless
is working but the router is not setup to work with your ISP. Can you use a
network cable and plut into the router and reach the internet?

Hope some of this helps.

We have no Idea on what that means... Grin... When we bought them
from BEST BUY, the saleman told us both all we would have to do is go
home (him to his and me to mine) and he would plug in the router, and
I would plug in the card into my PCMCIA slot and we would be able to
see each other. Which we can, but when I click on the Internet button
the I.E. comes up and it seems like it is TRYING to connect but
nothing is happening and then it just comes up with the regular junk
on the screen

There is no cable connecting our two houses, (to many kids in the
walkway between houses) We did it this way so both of us could use
one Road Runner account and each of us pays about $22.00 a month.
I do not know what an SSID is and Mike is at work now so I can not ask
him. We did not activate any type of security with is and when I see
it from my house (about 20 feet from his) it shows also no security.
Sence he allready had Roadrunner I am not sure what the settings are
but can ask him if I know what to ask him.

And THANKS for the input...

Dan

It's a bad idea to have a conductor there anyway -- lightning and different
ground potentials come to mind.

I'm no real expert but I've got a wireless network in my house so I guess I
know something. Do you actually want to see each other's computer (in order
to share files) or do you only want to share internet access? If you want
to share files, you need to be concerned about what operating systems each
computer is running. If any of the computers is not Win XP or Win 2000,
then you need to install NETBEUI on all computers. Also, you need to turn
off the built-in firewall on each XP computer.

I assume that Road Runner is a cable ISP. Is that correct? If so, then you
need to connect the cable modem into the router using a cat 5 cable. You
may need to use cross-over cable to do this. Read the cable modem
instructions to determine what sort of cable you need. You might want to
reset the router once you start. You should be able to see the router from
each computer.

One you get things running, you need to install a fire wall on each
computer. I use the free version of Zone Alarm but others are available.
These are just a few hints. There are a lot resources available here and on
the internet that you should make use of. Good luck.
