This morning Sky has announced the long awaited plans for its broadband
service which is to be free to Sky customers. This can prove particularly
attractive to many households who already have a Sky subscription, and
worrying to other ISPs who are not in a position to be able to offer such
combined services which is bringing the Internet industry far closer to the
water/electricity/gas utilities businesses which are selling dual fuel and
water packages across each others' markets.

The Sky deal offers a free connection with a 2 Mbps downstream speed
regardless of which TV package you subscribe to. In addition to this, it
will be offering faster services up to 16 Mbps for those who have bigger
requirements from just £10 per month. Each customer will receive a free
wireless router and a year's use of McAfee Internet Security Suite. Sky is
offering professional home installation services (£50 unless you subscribe
to the Max up to 16 Mbps package), similar to its satellite installation
service to help consumers get connected. Finally, they are also providing
Sky Talk which includes anytime UK landline calls for £5 per month (usual
catches apply regarding very long calls and non-geographic numbers.)

Sky Broadband will be an Easynet product. Easynet discontinued their
usenet service some time ago for their own customers and those using
their UKOnline retail brand.

The cheap prices presumably only apply to unbundled exchanges. In the
pdf posted this morning, there is a Connect product listed which looks
like the version using BT wires. 40GB cap at eighteen quid a month.

At those prices you can get a premium news provider.

$ky users always complain to me about price hikes, sport spread across the
pay channels (plus PPV) so you have to pay more.

$ky's service maintenance centre (SMC) is legendary, with frequent
invocations in relevant news groups to only deal with them by recorded
delivery letter, particularly when trying to reduce or cease service.

To put it another way if you think Bulldog was bad...

The Sky satellite service also started out free.

Then you had to pay for most for it, which was ok.

Then they started to put advertising on the channels you were paying for.

Then the content started to get crappy and they padded it with even more
advertising and self promotional material.

Sky isn't in the free lunch business, they do expensive junk food.

The OP didn't bother to mention the free package has a 2GB monthly usage
limit, in other words on average you can use a 2MB connection flat out for
about 4 minutes each day.

Look at the monthly usage for Sky's 'base' package 2gb - YES 2gb!

That may just about cover browsing!

This is just going to hasten the race to the bottom. Ever more companies,
cutting prices so they're losing money on their core products, trying to
make up the difference selling crap extra services to the unwary and
strangling everybody with ever more marketing. I just hope a couple of good
ISPs can survive the inevitable implosion of the market.

It's depressing that Murdoch's scabby company is in the marketplace now,
although that was probably inevitable. They have very deep pockets and can
afford the enormous losses that others can't, thus they can force everybody
else out of business, which is standard Murdoch practise. Worrying.

I have never had a problem with Skys service centre (other than the wait).
The staff are friendly and they have always solved the problems.
I even phoned them up to reduce my package as money was tight and they
reduced it there and then and gave me some half price months to help out.
You don't have to pay for repairs either.

I suspect that many of the problems result from customers being unfriendly
which always results in customer service agents doing as little as possible
to help whatever the business.
