An obscure spectrum debate in New Zealand highlights the dilemmas that
will be faced in many countries as broadband wireless frequencies
become prime real estate instead of neglected side streets.
The country's Ministry for Economic Development (MED) is threatening
to take back blocks of 2.3GHz spectrum currently held by start-up
operator Woosh Wireless, claiming these have been underused and that
re-auctioning them would create greater competition.
This row comes against a general trend for large players to take a
keen interest in WiMAX-suitable spectrum, an interest that will start
to sideline most of the start-ups.
