The most dramatic aspect of the smartphone market in the second half of
2010 has been the reinvention of Samsung. Samsung's Galaxy S has shipped
7 million units and has set targets of 20 million for this year – plus
one million tablets.

Always a powerhouse in mass market handsets and feature-packed media
phones, the Korean giant was still the ugly duckling of open OS
smartphones. But the success of its Galaxy S Android range, and to a
lesser extent the Wave, which runs its own bada OS, have turned it into
a swan that is giving Apple a run for its money in terms of mobile
allure – and aims to have the same effect in tablets.

Samsung is targeting over 40m unit sales in this category next year,
according to mobile division chief Shin Jong-kyun. He told the Nikkei
business daily that Samsung is targeting 20m smartphone sales worldwide
this year and double that figure in 2011. ...

But Motorola and HTC models in hot pursuit,
says ChangeWave consumer survey

A survey completed in early November of more than 1,200 U.S. consumers
who had purchased a smartphone in the past six months found that Apple
led all competitors in customer satisfaction, with 77% of iPhone owners
saying they were "very satisfied" with their decision and device.

But the surprise finding, said Paul Carton, vice president of research
at ChangeWave Research, was the "exceptionally strong" showing of
Motorola, which placed second, with 74% of owners giving their
Android-powered devices high marks. Motorola sells the Droid 2 and Droid
X.

In third place was HTC, which garnered a 63% vote for "very satisfied"
on the back of its Android-based Evo 4G and Droid Incredible.

Other manufacturers lagged significantly behind Apple, Motorola and HTC,
said Carton, including Samsung, with 45% of its smartphone owners very
satisfied, and Research in Motion (RIM) at 44%.

Verizon's early LTE network, and Sprint's current Wimax network are
technically not 4G either.

It's as much "4G" as anything else currently being deployed.

Steven is just trying to be pissy about T-Mobile, even though he had to
admit it's no worse than his favorite carrier.

Google's Android platform is gaining fast on market leader Apple and its
iPhone, according to a recent survey by research firm Nielsen.

The report stated that Android has 25.8 percent of the U.S. smartphone
market, compared to the iPhone 28.6 percent share. Meanwhile, Research
in Motion's BlackBerry devices, once the leader in the smartphone
market, continues to decline with a 26.1 percent of the market. RIM had
been ahead of Apple and Google with a 33 percent share as recent as June
2010.

While Nielsen noted that 87 percent of the smartphone market is
controlled fairly evenly by Apple, Google and RIM, devices running on
Google's Android platform are now the clear favorite among new handset
buyers, with over 40 percent of devices being Android -- beating out the
iPhone and BlackBerry at 27 and 19 percent, respectively.

Demand for Internet-enabled phones continues to be strong, with fully 45
percent of November buyers choosing a smartphone over a feature
handsets.
