Having a real struggle to get XP & ME to see each other (see earlier post:
Newbie XP/ME network). Have finally reached the stage where each machine can
ping the other but although files are shared I still can't see them across
the network via Explorer!
From WinME via Explorer 'Entire Network' is empty
From XP via Explorer I get the error message: 'Workgroup name' is not
accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource...'
Help!

if you look at the properties of My Computer is there a workgroup name
set and are they both the same. Also is there a PC name on each tha
tis different.

On the network connections is MS Network CLient and MS File & Printer
sharing present in the list of protocols. Have you defined a share
folder or printer on each so there is something to see.

Is Guest access enabled on XP or an equivalent username and password
set on both machines, need to be all capitals as that's what ME sends
regardless of what you enter.

Is "Use NetBIOS over TCP/IP" set to be forced on on XP (advanced
properties of WINS tab of TCP/IP or similar).

All firewalls off until you ge tit working.

Oh dear, this thing is so sensitive. First each machine could ping the other
then I read in this group that I should enable NETBIOS on both machines.
Unfortunately, after rebooting the WinME machine Neither can ping either and
so I disabled it again and still no joy. Grrrr.

Yes, each machine has a unique name and a Workgroup that is the same.

Err I think so. File & Printer sharing is enabled on both and some folder
have been shared via Explorer.

Yes Guest access is available on XP. Not too sure about ME. I mean, I have a
username and password required at startup. Is there an equivilant of Guest
access on WinME?

Err, remember I'm new at this. In Advanced TCP/IP Settings in the Local Area
Connection Properties of XP on the WINS Tab it's set (under NetBIOS
settings) to Default (Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server. If static IP
address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP.)
Another option is 'Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP'. Which one should I use? (and
why doesnt the Home Networking Wizard sort out all this Martian gobbledygook
anyway?)

Yes theyre off and I'm feeling very exposed.

As they used to say 'It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping' and
thanks to me messing with NetBIOS my set up currently 'don't mean a thing'!

use the "Enable" option, rather than the default. That way you know
its on.

Wizards are an attempt to make highly complex systems useable by
people with no understanding. They have their limitations - for
example it has no clue about your network system and how it works.
